The ASPCA initially launched the $100K Challenge in 2010 to engage and inspire shelters across the nation to save more lives then every before. They realized that in order to save more lives the shelters would need to be able to generate interest, support and excitement to increase the amount of energy and resources available from the community - it takes a community to save hundreds more lives. The ASPCA did just that - In 2010, competing shelters increased lives saved by 7,362 in just three months and last year’s contestants increased lives saved by an astonishing 8,977 more cats and dogs. The $100K Challenge is back for a 3rd year - this time the ASPCA has partnered with celebrity animal advocate, Rachael Ray, to offer competing shelters a chance at $500,000 in grant prizes!
The 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge launched on March 1st! The deadline for shelters across the nation to submit their application to be a competing shelter was March 13th-15th - with only the first 150 applications being accepted. The Humane Society of Central Washington mulled over the idea of undertaking such an astronimical challenge - with a major remodel project on the horizon and our marketing campaign in its' infant stage. It took no time at all for the board and staff to commit, no amount of work could keep us from our unwavering desire to save more lives! We dove right into the application process and on to the Qualifying Heat - where, in only 12 days and with numerous server issues, our community voted us into 1st place in the entire nation with 33,989 votes! The unyielding support from our community has given us the courage and inspiration to drive us forward and win this challenge.
